The threat of eviction had been lurking around them since 2006. The struggle of dozens of families who still clung onto their houses in Dey Krohom, in the central Tonle Bassac district of Phnom Penh, is one of the longest in the distressing two decade-old history of land issues in Cambodia. From one ultimatum to the next, the looming final offensive was expected to be carried out sooner or later. It happened in the early hours of the morning, on Saturday January 24th. Nobody imagined the eviction would be so well-organised but what is more, so violent. And the 7NG company, who was granted the land as part of a concession to build a residential tower block and a shopping mall, went all out in the process. [Edited 26-01-2008]

Mangroves typically form buffer zones between sea and land and can be specifically found in tropical regions. The Cambodian Research Centre for Development predicts they will be the first to suffer the effects of climate change in Cambodia. They will be the largest area to go under water, in particular in Koh Kong, in the Southwest of the country... by 2100. But the most unrealistic in this scenario would be for mangroves to survive until then. According to Jos Stieks, who is attempting to preserve about a thousand hectares of mangrove forests situated in Prey Nup, province of Preah Sihanouk, “if men continue to kill the mangrove at this rate, there will be nothing left in ten years.”

The Khmer Krom, Cambodians born in the Mekong Delta in Kampuchea Krom,  a region once fully part of the territory of Cambodia, are chased relentlessly by the Vietnamese authorities and mistreated, put in prison or placed under house arrest whenever they try to peacefully express their political opinions and religious beliefs. In a report released on January 21st 2009 entitled "On the Margins: Rights Abuses of Ethnic Khmer in Vietnam's Mekong Delta ", the organisation for the defence of Human rights Human Rights Watch (HRW) denounces the harsh suppression by the Vietnamese government, "wary about possible Khmer Krom nationalist aspirations", of protests organised by this large ethnic group.
